FIFA awards U-20 Women’s World Cup 2010 to Germany

Germany will host the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2010, a year ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, following a decision made by FIFA’s Executive Committee on Friday 14 March 2008 in Zurich. FIFA’s highest body, thus, accepted the proposal to organise from now on the U-20 Women’s World Cup in the same country that is to host the Women’s World Cup a year later. The same pattern has applied to men’s football since 2001, when the FIFA Confederations Cup was played in Korea and Japan a year before the FIFA World Cup was co-hosted by both countries.

“The decision made by FIFA implies that our 2011 Women’s World Cup OC that was set up in January will be in charge of planning and organising the U-20 World Cup. Thereby it will be possible to test at least some stadiums as well as some organisational aspects a year before kick-off. In addition, we are thinking about some extra venues”, commented the General Secretary of the German Football Association, Wolfgang Niersbach.
