Felix Magath leaves VfL Wolfsburg and joins Schalke

With the German championship within reach, Felix Magath has announced that he will leave VfL Wolfsburg, currently in first place in the Bundesliga, at the end of the season. Magath joins Schalke 04 as their new coach and general manager. The former national player signs a four-year-contract valid until June 30, 2013. Wolfsburg confirmed the upcoming coaching change with a press release on Wednesday. It has not been determined, who will succeed Magath in Wolfsburg.

“We have reached the goals set in 2007 much quicker than anticipated”, said the 55-year old Magath, who has had two hugely successful years in Wolfsburg. “We have a young team with a lot of potential and a sound contractual situation.”

Wolfsburg’s chairman Hans Dieter Pötsch said: “We still have four games to go, but even at this point, we are extremely thankful to Felix Magath. He has accomplished so much in such a short time-span.”
