Federal Chancellor Merkel initiates application for Women

Federal Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel suggested an application of the German Football Association (DFB) as host of the Women's World Cup 2011 during her greeting speech at the governing body's special Congress at the Leipzig opera. "Should the DFB consider to apply, I would be happy to support the application." Whereupon Dr. Theo Zwanziger, acting DFB President, answered: "We are happy to work with this encouragement."

Beforehand, the Federal Chancellor had praised the DFB's work in the field of Women's and Girls' Football: "Women's Football has become a trade mark", Angela Merkel said. "We have an impressing list of successes. The German women are reigning World Champions and six times European Champions. And there will be an all-German UEFA Cup final next year: The men have to work very hard for achieving the same."
