In the day's evening kick-off Mainz faced VfB Stuttgart at the Coface Arena. The first half was lacking in quality until Johannes Geis' sumptuous free kick hit the back of the net to give the hosts the lead. They then dominated proceedings and looked likely to grab a second but Filip Kostic's 72nd minute cross deceived everyone and landed in the back of the net to give VfB an equaliser. Kostic almost turned the game on it's head seconds later, but shot wide. Shinji Okazaki almost won it for the hosts in the final ten minutes but his powerful effort was cleared off the line.
