Fairy-tale football in Lotte: Leverkusen knocked out on penalties

What an evening of cup football: the games between Sportfreunde Lotte and Bayer Leverkusen (2-2), SC Freiburg and SV Sandhausen (3-3), and Würzburger Kickers and 1860 Munich (0-0) all went into penalties. Only Arminia Bielefeld from the earlier kick-offs managed to go through in normal time, beating Dresden 1-0 away.

The big talking point is third-division side Lotte, who caused a huge upset knocking Champions League outfit Bayer Leverkusen out. Luka Tankulic converted the deciding penalty in the shootout. Kevin Volland and Julian Baumgartlinger both had their spot-kicks saved by former Leverkusen keeper Benedikt Fernandez. So against all odds, Sportfreunde Lotte go through to the Last 16.

When Kevin Volland scored his first competitive goal for Leverkusen in the 25th minute, it was difficult to predict anything other than a comfortable Bayer victory. But underdogs Lotte had different ideas, and actually had an equaliser unjustly disallowed in the first half. Moments into the second half they got their reward - a calamitous error at the back saw the ball deflect off Robert Hilbert into his own net. 1-1.

The upset looked possible, Lotte were threatening, Leverkusen visibly unnerved, and then, an untimely red card for the third-division side. It suddenly looked a lot bleaker. Lotte managed to bring the game into extra time, but Kevin Volland soon scored his and Leverkusen’s second of the game. It would now take nothing less than a miracle for Sportfreunde Lotte. But they never gave up, and the ten men somehow found another equaliser, bringing the game to penalties where the footballing gods smiled on them. Lotte through, Leverkusen out.

Sandhausen win thriller in Freiburg

Marco Knaller was the hero of the day after SV Sandhausen and SC Freiburg’s six-goal thriller went to the death. Knaller saved the deciding penalty from Janik Haberer, sending Sandhausen into the Last 16 for the third time in the club’s history. 4-3 was the score after penalties.

Also through to the round of 16 are 1860 Munich, who knocked out Bavarian and Bundesliga 2 rivals Würzburger Kickers 4-3 on penalties, after an uneventful 120 minutes of football.

Not Dresden’s day

After dominating for 90 minutes, seeing countless chances pass them by and even having a goal disallowed, Dynamo Dresden will wonder how it is Arminia Bielefeld in the draw for the round of 16. One lapse of concentration at the back and a solo counterattack from Christoph Hemlein gave Bielefeld the lead, which they somehow managed to hold on to.
