Dream start for Can and Liverpool

Five weeks after EURO 2016 in France, the Premier League season is back under way in England. On matchday one, Emre Can and Liverpool celebrated a spectacular 4-3 away win against Arsenal. Reds head coach Jürgen Klopp brought Can on for Philippe Coutinho in the 70th minute, whilst Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker missed out for Arsenal.

England international Theo Walcott put Arsenal into the lead in the 31st minute, just a few moments after missing a penalty. However, Liverpool tipped the game back in their favour with a dominant spell of play: Coutinho (45+1’/56’) got a brace, with Adam Lallana (49’) and Sadio Mane (63’) also adding to Arsenal’s 18 minutes of misery. The Gunners bounced back, showing great spirit to bring it back to 4-3 with goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (64’) and Calum Chambers (75’). Liverpool then defended well in a tense final phase to secure a narrow victory.

Manchester United also had a successful start to the season. World champion Bastian Schweinsteiger missed out as his team managed a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth to top the table ahead of Liverpool. Juan Mata (40’), Wayne Rooney (59’) and star signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for United, with Adam Smith (69’) scoring an impressive consolation goal for the hosts.
