Draxler and Kruse fire Wolfsburg to victory

Julian Draxler and Max Kruse were on target during VfL Wolfsburg’s 2-1 home victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 25 in the Bundesliga, boosting their chances in the race for Europe. Schalke are in fourth place following their 3-1 victory at FC Köln, while Bayer 04 Leverkusen salvaged a 3-3 draw at FC Augsburg despite trailing 3-0 at one point in the game. Only one of the relegation candidates was able to collect a point: Eintracht Frankfurt earned a 1-1 draw at home against FC Ingolstadt. Hannover 96 suffered a 4-1 defeat at Werder Bremen and TSG Hoffenheim were outplayed by VfB Stuttgart in a 5-1 defeat.

Wolfsburg were quick to take control of the game in the Volkswagen-Arena with Draxler and Kruse’s scoring in quick succession in the 15th and 17th minutes, as the hosts took the lead. Raffael was able to reduce Wolfsburg’s lead to one goal midway through the first half, but ultimately the Wolves were able to hang on to secure all three points.

Schalke took the lead two minutes into the game against Köln, as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted a penalty that was given for handball. Germany U21 international Max Meyer doubled Schalke’s lead after 24 minutes, before former youth team international Leonardo Bittencourt pulled one back for Köln before the break. Franco di Santo’s goal midway through the second half finally put the game to bed.

Bayer 04 recover from three goal deficit

Leverkusen was able to avoid a fourth straight defeat in Augsburg, recovering from a three goal deficit. South Korean international Ja-Cheol Koo completed his hat-trick ten minutes after the half time as Augsburg looked on course for a comfortable victory. Germany international Karim Bellarabi restored hope for the visitors with a goal on the hour mark. Augsburg’s Paul Verhaegh brought Leverkusen back into the game with an own goal in the 80th minute and Hakan Calhanoglu completed the comeback in stoppage time, by converting his team’s penalty for handball.

Eintracht Frankfurt conceded an early opener against Ingolstadt, after David Abraham had handled the ball inside the area and Moritz Hartmann converted from the spot after eight minutes. However, Marco Russ levelled the score with twenty minutes left to play in the second half. The draw leaves Frankfurt in 16th place, one point behind Darmstadt who will play in Mainz on Sunday.

Stuttgart and Bremen secure clear victories

Georg Niedermeier put Stuttgart on course after six minutes before Lukas Rupp doubled their advantage shortly before half-time. Niedermeier replicated his first-half effort in the 51st minute to put Stuttgart 3-0 up, before Andrej Kramaric restored some hope for Hoffenheim in the 73rd minute. But Filip Kostic and Germany U21 international Timo Werner completed the scoring as VfB secured a comfortable 5-1 win over Hoffenheim.

Fin Bartels and Claudio Pizarro opened the scoring for Werder in their encounter with northern rivals Hannover. Kenan Karaman was on target for Hannover shortly before the break, but goals from Theodor Gebre Selassie and Zlatko Junuzovic saw Werder pull away in the second half.
