DFB second round facts

The second round of the DFB Cup will take place on the 25 and the 26th of October, DFB.de summarises all of the most information about the Wednesday games which will kick off at 20:45 CEST, including a rematch of the first ever final in 1935.

1. FC Nürnberg vs. Schalke 04

Head-to-head: It may be harder to find a game steeped in more cup tradition. These two sides contested the first ever final of the DFB Cup, which was called the Tschammer Cup back then. Georg Friedel’s brace was enough to fire Nürnberg to the title to take the trophy back to Nuremburg. The two teams have faced each other a number of times since then in the cup and league matches, Schalke currently have the better head-to-head record with 29 wins, 15 draws, 20 losses.

First round results: Nürnberg were shaky aganst Viktoria Köln from the Regionalliga and needed penalties to overcome the lower-ranked side. Enis Alushi kept his cool to win it for his team, after Kevin Holzweilers was the unlucky man to miss for Viktoria Köln. Schalke faced sixth division side FC Villingen in the first round and recorded a comfortable 4-1 win, with their opponents goal being just a consolation, coming in the 90th minute.

Pre-match comments:

Nürnberg chairman, Andreas Bornemann: “Schalke are obviously a strong opponent, but we’re looking forward to the home tie and a full house against a Bundesliga side.”

S04 coach Markus Weinzierl: “It’s a very interesting draw and it’s a game which will be special because of the good relationship between both sets of fans. We obviously want to advance to the next round.”

2015/16 Cup run: Nürnberg were knocked out of last year’s competition after losing 2-0 to Hertha BSC in the round of 16, while Schalke bowed out a round earlier against Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-0).

1. FC Köln vs. TSG Hoffenheim

Head-to-head: 2002 was the last time the two sides met in the DFB Cup. It was FC Köln that came out on top on that occasion, recording a comfortable 5-1 win. The two sides have met each other regularly in the Bundesliga since then. Köln hold a slight advantage in the 16 encounters between the two side, winning seven games. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim have won four of those fixtures, with both teams playing out five draws.

First round results: FC Köln took no prisoners against six division side BFC Preussen, thrashing their opponents 7-0. Hoffenheim also had little trouble overcoming their opponents 1. FC Germania Egestorf Langreder. TSG beat the Regionalliga from Niedersachsen 6.0, with Andrej Kramarić scoring a hat-trick.

Pre-match comments:

Köln head coach Peter Stöger: “We are delighted to be playing a cup game at home, something we haven’t had in a while. It will obviously be a difficult task against a fellow Bundesliga side, but we will not shy away and are looking forward to playing in front of a full house at home.”

Alexander Rosen (director of football at TSG): “It will be a challenging game. It’s also a shame that we are playing away from home, as we would have preferred to have played in front of our fans. Nevertheless, we have a great opportunity to progress to the next round and we want to make the most of this chance.”

2015/2016 DFB Cup run: FC Köln bowed out in the second round of last year’s cup, after beating SV Meppen 4-0 in the first round. Werder Bremen knocked out Köln with a narrow 1-0 win. TSG suffered a first round defeat last year, losing 2-0 away to 1860 München.

FC Bayern München – FC Augsburg

Head-to-head: The battle between the two Bavarian sides is familiar in the DFB Cup. FC Bayern beat FC Augsburg 2-0 in the quarter-final in both 2012 and 2013. FC Augsburg could trip up the favourites in the cup, after beating them 1-0 on 5th April 2014 with the goal from Sascha Mölders. Bayern have come out on top in most meetings between the two sides, winning 13 and only losing 4.

First round results: FC Bayern took the lead in the 3rd minute through Robert Lewandowski against Carl Zeiss Jena in the first round. The Poland international went on to score another two goals. Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels also scored to make it 5-0 to FC Bayern. FC Augsburg beat FV Ravensburg in the first round 2-0 with goals from Ja-Cheol Koo and Raúl Bobadilla.

Pre-match comments:

Mats Hummels: “Augsburg are a difficult team to play. But we’re at home and we have to win.”

FC Augsburg manager Dirk Schuster: “We could have got an easier draw but we’re looking forward to facing the top team in Germany twice in a matter of days.”

2015/16 DFB Cup run: FC Bayern couldn’t have had a more successful cup run in 2015/16. Douglas Costa scored the winning penalty for Bayern in the final against Borussia Dortmund, securing an 18th DFB Cup win for the club. FC Augsburg beat SV Elversberg and SC Freiburg to make it to the quarter-finals but were knocked out in this stage by losing 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund – 1. FC Union Berlin

Head-to-head: The two sides have previously never met in competitive competition. Their last brush with one another came in a friendly match in January 2016, which saw BVB claim a 3-1 win at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

First Round results: Shinji Kagawa was Dortmund’s star performer in their 3-0 first round victory over Eintracht Trier, scoring twice, with André Schürrle adding the third. It was a closer-fought contest between Union Berlin and MSV Duisberg in their opening round tie. The scores were level at 1-1 with 90 minutes played, but Union secured their passage to the second round thanks to an own goal by Fabian Schnellhardt in extra time, which gave them a 2-1 win.

Pre-match comments:

1. FC Union Berlin marketing chief Helmut Schulte stated that “an away match against Borussia Dortmund is, of course, a dream tie for us, even though there would be plenty of easier tasks than winning away at the Signal Iduna Park. For our players it will be a highlight to be able to play in front of a full house in Dortmund, and our fans can really help make this game something special.”

2015/2016 DFB Cup run: Last year’s DFB Cup ended dramatically for BVB. They made their way to the final, and took FC Bayern to penalties in a tense contest, but fell to a 4-3 shootout loss after misses from Sven Bender and Sokratis. Union Berlin had a far shorter run in last year’s competition after a shock first round loss to Regional League side Viktoria Köln.
