DFB reveals slogan and emblem for 2011 bidding

„Wiedersehen bei Freunden – See you again“. The German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund) has chosen a slogan for their bid to host the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Following the successful 2006 FIFA World Cup, Germany looks forward to once again welcome fans from the whole wide football world.

“We had a great 2006 World Cup. Now we’d like to stage another great tournament, this time for the women. Women’s football is tremendously popular in Germany”, said DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger in Berlin. On Thursday evening, the DFB had invited 200 guests to the Intercontinental Hotel in Berlin for the unveiling of the slogan and the official bidding emblem. The day in Berlin, March 1, 2007, had yet another significance, as it marked the closing and decomposition of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee.

Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel forwarded the support of the German government through a video message: “Today, the campaign for the 2011 FIFA World Cup kicks off. Women’s football has made great strides, here in Germany, but really world wide, too. What a joy it would be, if we could once again welcome fans from all corners of the world here in Germany. We keep our fingers crossed, that the DFB succeeds with his bid for 2011.”

Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, Minister of the Interior, was a guest of honour on Thursday evening. Franz Beckenbauer and DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger, both members of the bidding committee, also attended the event. The committee is completed by Dr. Thomas Bach, President of the German Sports Federation, DFB Vice-President Dr. h.c. Engelbert Nelle, DFB Executive Board memberHannelore Ratzeburg, and DFB department head Heike Ullrich.

Franz Beckenbauer said: “I think it’s a great idea that the DFB wants to host the women’s World Cup just five years after the men’s tournament. Based on the existing infra structure and the newly built stadiums, Germany would be a perfect chioce to once again welcome the international community.”

Two U 19 juniors, Carolin Schiewe and Josephine Schanke, presented the official emblem for Germany’s 2011 bid. The logo embraches the grace of women’s football and the football fever that turned Germany into one big arena in the summer of 2006. The emblem was created by the Stuttgart based agency wvp.

Already, 24 German cities have expressed their interest as a host city for 2011. Horst R. Schmidt, the DFB General Secretary, said: “We are in the comfortable position to pick and chose. The final decision has to be made together with FIFA, but only if we should get the nod. We recommend to give a key role to Frankfurt, maybe as the organisational headquarter. Regional diversity is always important when picking tournament venues.”

The following cities have applied: Aalen, Augsburg, Berlin, Bielefeld, Bochum, Duisburg, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg, Gelsenkirchen, Göttingen, Hamburg, Hannover, Leipzig, Karlsruhe, Kassel, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Mönchengladbach, Potsdam, Reutlingen, Sinsheim/Hoffenheim, Stuttgart, Ulm and Wolfsburg.
