DFB-President announces candidacy for UEFA board

Dr. Theo Zwanziger has announced his candidacy for a position on UEFA’s Executive Committee. The DFB-President intends to run for the position at next March’s UEFA Congress in Copenhagen. Zwanziger could then succeed Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder as the German representative on the board.

Dr. Zwanziger had informed Michel Platini during a meeting on October 22, while the UEFA-President had stated at an earlier date, that he would favour a continued German input for UEFA’s highest administrative committee. The DFB Presidential Board will discuss Zwanziger’s candidacy at the next meeting scheduled for November 14, 2008. “In case our Presidential Board supports my candidacy, I will do my utmost to make it a successful run, strongly relying on the vital support by the DFB and the Bundesliga”, said Dr. Theo Zwanziger.

Franz Beckenbauer, himself a member of the FIFA Executive Committee since 2007, welcomed the candidacy: “I applaud Dr. Theo Zwanziger’s decision. He is such an extraordinary communicator. The future progress of European football should benefit tremendously because of his vast experience, his judicial background and his talent to come up with a workable solution under the most dire circumstances. Theo Zwanziger is very much in touch with the grassroots level of football, yet knows about the needs of the pro game as well. He is also one of the very likeable people in this business.”

Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder is also a proponent of Zwanziger’s candidacy: “Twenty years of service for FIFA and UEFA have taught me that the representation of German football is very important. It’s great that Dr. Theo Zwanziger tries to continue this long tradtion. By all means, I will support his candidacy.”
