Pre-match comments:

Freiburg's assistant coach Lars Voßler: "We obviously still remember Sandhausen from last season, although they've had a change in management with Kenan Kocak replacing Alois Schwartz. We want to take advantage of this opportunity to secure a spot in the next round with a victory at home."

Last season’s cup elimination: Freiburg's Cup campaign ended in the second round last year, as they lost 3-0 against FC Augsburg. Sandhausen also lost their second round match in a penalty shootout against 1. FC Heidenheim.
