DFB Congress: Gerhard Schröder appointed as honorary member

In the course of the governing body's special Congress of the German Football Association (DFB) in the Leipzig opera former federal chancellor Gerhard Schröder has been awarded the DFB honorary membership. Schröder is the 61st personality in the henceforth 105 year history of the DFB who has received such an honour. DFB president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder and the acting DFB president Dr Theo Zwanziger presented the honorary certificate and pin to the new honorary member on stage .

"Gerhard Schröders' honorary membership shows that there is a partnership between sport and politics. Congratulations to you", said federal chancellor Angela Merkel with appreciation for her predecessor in office. Following, Dr Theo Zwanziger delivered the laudation for Gerhard Schröder: "Actually, I do not have to say anything anymore after the movie", said the acting DFB president after a one minute short movie about the footballer Schröder.

Notable Commitment during the World Cup application process

Theo Zwanziger recognised Gerhard Schröder's great services for football and especially his outstanding dedication during the application process for the World Cup 2006: "Despite of all the difficulties this country currently deals with, the chancellor always supported the World Cup. He was the one realising the great chance for our country in staging the World Cup. In addition, it is also worth mentioning the outstanding art- and culture program, that has been created with the support of the federal government."

"Gerhard Schröder's heart not only beats for the World Cup. As being a former active athlete, he never looses sight of the other relevant aspects in sport, basically the true aspects within our sport. To this end, especially the girls and Women's Football", remarked Dr Zwanziger. In summer, Gerhard Schröder spontaneously invited the DFB Women's Nationalteam to a barbecue in the chancellorship on the occasion of their win of the European Championships. The Potsdam residential school's girls Football team, who won the School Worldchampionships and a School team from Cottbus, third in the School World's, were also invited.

"Gerhard Schröder comes from the grass roots. He has never forgotten his heritage and never denied it. We thank him for his great achievements, as well as his outstanding services to German football", ended the acting DFB president his speech.

Schröder: "I am proud to be a member"

In his acceptance speech, Gerhard Schröder described his understanding of football. "Football for me is mostly fun within the community. Furthermore, it is the chance of becoming acknowledged and rise in society namely through fairness and exertion. Motivation and the capability to perform paired with fairness, those are the virtues in high demand. I am proud and happy that I am a member of the DFB".
