DFB Congress: FC Bayern Munich receives the Julius-Hirsch-Award

The German record holders and cup winners FC Bayern Munich have been awarded the Julius-Hirsch-Award endowed with 20.000 Euro in the course of the governing body's special Congress of the German Football Association (DFB) at Leipzig opera.

Once again, Prof Moshe Zimmermann (Tel Aviv) has highlighted the situation of the Jews in the Third Reich in reference to football. After his speech, Bayern Munich's Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Prof Dr Fritz Scherer (1st Vice President) accepted the price handed out by acting DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger and DFB President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder.

"Julius-Hirsch-Award shall be trend-setting"

"Above all, the Julius-Hirsch-Award shall be trend-setting", said Dr Theo Zwanziger. Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel also pointed to the positive aspects of this award in her speech: "The DFB sets a positive sign with the Julius-Hirsch-Award foundation and accepts its responsibilities."

On the 25th of July 2005, the FC Bayern Munich has carried out a "Match of Peace" in the Allianz Arena between its Under-17 team and an Israeli-Palestinian youth selection from the "Peres Center for Peace". The foundation of the Nobel Peace Prize Winner and former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres supports the communication process between Israelis and Palestinians.

The award is handed out in remembrance of Jewish national player Julius Hirsch, who was deported in March 1943 and later killed in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Descendants of the former national player, who followed the invitation of the DFB, attended the award ceremony.

While reappraising its role during the Third Reich, the German Football Association donated the Julius-Hirsch-Award to set a sign against racism. In the future, personalities out of business, politics, culture and sport will form the jury.
