DFB-Academy contingent travels to USA to “gain new insights”

From science to top-level sport, from technology to innovation. The DFB-Academy is continuing its cooperation in the USA. A DFB group that included Oliver Bierhoff, director of all national teams and development, visited various businesses and institutions in California over the last few days. The DFB started to increase its involvement on the west coast of America in September 2017 and have benefitted from a range of new and cutting-edge insights since.

“We want our academy to benefit from the newest and most exciting ideas from modern science and technology, in order to continue in our footballing development,” said Bierhoff. To that end, the DFB-Academy held its first forum in the form of the Game Analysis Congress in Frankfurt am Main in November 2017. Amongst the 230 experts from around the world who attended the forum, there were numerous representatives from the USA. “The co-operation is critical for us to maintain existing partnerships while gaining new insights. Digitalisation, innovation and research is taking on more and more of a crucial role within top-level sport - the DFB wants to be at the forefront of that,” Bierhoff continued.

The first thing that took place on the trip was a meeting with Jesse Fioranelli of the San José Earthquakes. The American club has been a partner of the DFB since July 2017 and plays in the MLS. After that, Bierhoff made a visit to Stanford University, where he met amongst others Condoleeza Rice, who was the US Foreign Minister from 2005 to 2009 and has lectured at Stanford ever since. He also spoke with sport management professor George Foster, as well as Brian Lowery from the “Executive Training Program”.

The DFB group also gained new digital insights at Google and Apple. An informal meeting took place in the ‘Google Garage’ with innovation coach Frederik Pferdt, while at Apple discussions were held with Michael Tacho, who is responsible for the marketing of the iPad across the globe.
