Darmstadt edge closer to promotion after win in Kaiserslautern

1. FC Kaiserslautern suffered a major setback in their bid to secure a direct promotion spot, after losing 3-2 to Darmstadt 98. Darmstadt, who were only promoted into the second flight at the start of this campaign, are now just one point behind FCK in third place.

U21 Germany international Kerem Demirbay scored directly from a corner kick to give Kaiserslautern the lead, but Darmstadt quickly equalised when FCK keeper Marius Müller brought down Marcel Heller in the area and Romain Bregerie converted from the spot. Darmstadt went ahead minutes later courtesy of Ronny König’s goal.

Darmstadt bagged a third goal through Hanno Behrens shortly before half time, but Kaiserslautern looked determined to start a comeback in the second half. They struggled to create chances for large spells in the second 45, but Kevin Stöger managed to pull one goal back with two minutes left to play. The tension on the pitch was immense and Kaiserslautern squandered several good opportunities in injury time to salvage a point from the match.

Substitute Berggreen keeps Braunschweig in promotion race

Eintracht Braunschweig are still gunning for a promotion spot following their 2-0 victory against FSV Frankfurt. Trailing third place by three points before Sundays' games, they still have a chance to make a late charge in the remaining three matches. A brace by substitute Emil Berggreen in the second half was enough to see off Frankfurt, who remain a relegation candidate with 36 points to their name.
