Crunch clash against South Korea

The DFB-Team return to action this evening after drawing their opening fixture 2-2 against Mexico in Brazil. They face South Korea in a hugely important Group C clash at 21:00 CEST. They spent Friday night in Salvador watching the opening ceremony and are already impressed by what they’ve seen.

“It’s a shame that we couldn’t be there, as it would have been nice to spend some time with the other German athletes at the Maracana,” explained Julian Brandt. “However, we’re already three days into our tournament and need to get ready for our second game. We want to reach the Olympic Village and to do that we need to progress. In a way tonight’s game is like a final. We need to win the game, as that would put us in a good position ahead of the final round of matches,” said the 20-year-old Bayer 04 Leverkusen attacker.

Reunion for Bender and Brandt

Assistant coach Thomas Nörenberg was also aware of the importance of the game at the press conference, before adding that “we’ll give them respect. They have a good team and know how to play good football.” Despite this, he said that the Germany players will be focussing on their own strengths throughout the game.

The game acts as a reunion for Lars Bender and Julian Brandt as they will come up against former Leverkusen star Heung-Min Son, who scored in the 8-0 win over Fiji. “Obviously Son is a quality player, however, we can’t just focus on him,” commented Thomas Nörenberg.

It’s still unclear whether captain Leon Goretzka will feature. “There’s a question mark over his participation. We’ll have to wait and see,” concluded Nörenberg.
