Can’s Liverpool in goalless draw with United

The weekend’s all-star Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United ended in a goalless stalemate. It was a hard-fought match but in the end, the two managers had to be content with sharing the spoils (0-0).

After last night’s game, Klopp’s Liverpool remain in fourth place (17 points), while Mourinho’s United lie three places behind in seventh (14 points), meaning the reds missed an opportunity to make up ground on the clubs at the summit of the table. Manchester City and Arsenal currently share top spot with 19 points.

As expected in a game between two bitter rivals, the first half was a tense affair. Both sides fought hard and played with great intensity but both also lacked the necessary cutting edge in the final third to make the breakthrough. It was far from Liverpool or United’s best performance of the season and the lack of clear goalscoring chances reflected this.

First start for Can

Emre Can was in the Liverpool starting eleven for the first time this Premier League season, with Klopp’s Liverpool were compact in defence, much like the visitors. Going forward, however, the reds were less of a threat for long periods. In fact, it was Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic who had the best chance of the game up until that point. After a good cross in from the right by Paul Pogba, the Swede was unable to direct his free-header at the back post on target (55’).

In the last quarter of the game Liverpool upped the pressure on the United defence, creating some good chances. Record league champions United retreated deeper and deeper into their own half, but held on to keep a clean sheet.
