Can, Marin & co.: Germans in European action

When the knockout stages of the European competitions get under way this week, there will be many German players, not at Bundesliga clubs, taking to the pitch. The former Germany international Marko Marin, who plays for RSC Anderlecht, will come up against, amongst others, Kevin Kuranyi, who currently plays for Dynamo Moscow when the two teams meet on Thursday (21:05 CET) in the Europa League round of 32.

Mario Gomez is also still involved in the Europa League competition with Fiorentina, who play Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday (21.05 CET). There are many German players in the RB Salzburg team; however, it is unlikely that they’ll start against FC Villarreal on Thursday (21.05). Alexander Walke is currently second choice goalkeeper while right back Benno Schmitz and attacker Nils Quaschner have had little game time for the current table toppers in the Austrian Football Bundesliga. The match between Liverpool and Besiktas (also on Thursday, 21.05 CET) sees the current Germany u21 international Emre Can come up against former youth internationals Tolgay Arslan and Cenk Tosun.

World Champions Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira, who are both top performers for Real Madrid, should feature in the Champions League game tomorrow against FC Schalke 04 (20.15 CET, live on ZDF and Sky).

If FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique sticks with the same line-up from the previous Champions League match, Marc-André ter Stegen should play. The former Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper has been second choice behind teammate Claudio Bravo in the league. However, he has always played up to now in the Champions Leauge fixtures. Barcelona play Manchester City next Tuesday. Arsenal players Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil have a break from European competition this week with their game against AS Monaco scheduled for next Wednesday.
