BVB back to winning ways - Another three points for Wolfsburg

Borussia Dortmund finally ended to their run of seven successive Bundesliga games without a win, bringing Borussia Mönchengladbach’s unbeaten run to an end at the same time. BVB were 1-0 winners against the Foals, courtesy of a bizarre own goal from World Champion Christoph Kramer. VfL Wolfsburg continued their great form, beating struggling Hamburger SV 2-0 to record a fifth straight top-flight victory.

Kramer's moment of madness

The top fixture on matchday 11 was without a doubt the Borussia Derby in Dortmund. Gladbach went into the game unbeaten in all competitions this season, while BVB were sitting bottom of the Bundesliga table following Werder Bremen’s victory on Saturday. Jürgen Klopp’s side began the match at a tremendous pace, creating chance after chance, but they just couldn’t find a way past Yann Sommer. The post also came to the rescue for the Foals in the first half, which ended goalless. Lucien Favre’s men had failed to produce a single shot, with Dortmund by far the better team, but it was looking like it might take something special for them to make the breakthrough. Marco Reus came close on a number of occasions, but it was his Germany teammate Christoph Kramer who opened the scoring, albeit at the wrong end. The World Champion got his calculations all wrong, firing a back-pass from near the half-way line over his own goalkeeper’s head and into the empty net. The visitors couldn’t muster a comeback as BVB held on to claim a much needed win that lifts them up to 15th place in the standings. Despite defeat, Gladbach remain third and in a Champions League qualifying spot.

Wolfsburg carry on winning

VfL Wolfsburg hosted Hamburger SV in the earlier Sunday fixture and in spite of completing Europa League duty on Thursday, the Wolves looked the more threatening of the two sides. Ivica Olic opened the scoring in the 27th minute, deflecting Kevin De Bruyne’s wayward volley inside Jaroslav Drobny’s post. Wolfsburg effectively ended HSV’s challenge with just short of 30 minutes left to play. Aaron Hunt, who scored two goals in their 5-1 Europa League win over Krasnodar, calmly slotted home after being found by De Bruyne. Dieter Hecking’s men have now won each of their last eight competitive fixtures and have tightened their grip on second place in the Bundesliga, four points behind leaders Bayern München. Meanwhile, Hamburg dropped back into a direct relegation spot and are yet to manage a run of good form this season.
