Brilliant start against Costa Rica

With a 4:2 (2:1) victory over Costa Rica, Germany’s U20 Women’s national team picked up a great start into FIFA U20 Women's World Cup on home soil. In the second match of Group B (kick off 2.30 pm) France plays Colombia in Bochum.

The opening match took place in front of 23.000 people in a sold out stadium in Bochum. DFB-Trainer Maren Meinert’s team dominated the game from the off and took an early lead in the 2nd minute of the match. Costa Rica’s goalkeeper Priscilla Tapia couldn’t save a nice shot by Turid Knaak, Svenja Huth took the opportunity and scored 1:0.

The DFB-team continued to dominate the game in the following. In the 9th minute Knaak missed the target closely. A few minutes later the team did it a bit better: Huth played nicely to Schmidt over the right wing and the FCR Duisburg forward Alexandra Popp made it 2:0 for Germany. Costa Rica succeeded to shorten the result to 2:1 before half time.

In the second half Germany’s fans cheered for Popp’s 3:1 and a few minutes later for Hegering’s 4:1 hammer from 20 metres, which was her first goal ever for the national team. The only downer was Schmidt’s suspension in 72th minute after referee Hong Eun Ah from South Korea saw an emergency foul in the box. Costa Rica’s Katherine Alvarado scored the following penalty. The game ended 4:2.

Neid congratulates

Silvia Neid, Germany’s Head Coach of the Women’s nation team watched the game on the stands and was happy about the opening: „Congratulations to a convincing victory. It was a good start into the tournament. One can build on that performance. Now Maren Meinert needs to hold focus and concentration up until the next match in order to qualify easily for the next round. But I am positive that the team is going to do well.”

In the next matches the German team will play against Colombia (Friday, 6 pm in Bochum) and France (July 20th 11 am in Augsburg). The final takes place in Bielefeld August 1st, 3 p.m.
