Bremen's Fritz to retire

Werder Bremen captain Clemens Fritz will end his playing career in the summer. The 36-year-old versatile defensive player announced his decision on Monday afternoon. Fritz, who has 22 caps for Germany, suffered an ankle injury in early March which required an operation and hasn't been available to the north Germans since.

"I’ve had time whilst I’ve been injured to have a good think about my future and to listen to what my body’s telling me," said Fritz on the Werder homepage. "Unfortunately, I still have ongoing problems with my ankle and that means that despite wanting to carry on, I won’t be able to re-gain full fitness and will not continue my career beyond this summer."

Fritz has been captain of Werder since 2011 and has played 368 games for the Green-Whites. He also played 22 times for Germany between 2006 and 2008 including representing his country at the 2008 European Championship.
