Brandt scores as Leverkusen beat Bayern

Germany U19 international Julian Brandt got on the scoresheet as Bayer Leverkusen won matchday 31’s top clash 2-0 against champions Bayern München. Brandt netted his fourth Bundesliga goal on what was his 19th birthday and also got to lead the traditional post-match celebrations with the home fans. The youngster’s goal in the 81st minute wrapped up the three points for Bayer 04, after Hakan Calhanoglu had fired them in front with a direct free kick.

Leverkusen, who are now unbeaten in ten successive games, are up to third until Sunday at least, but Borussia Mönchengladbach will be looking to return to the final direct qualifying spot for the Champions League with a win against Hertha Berlin tomorrow. Bayern’s focus during the game was also clearly on Europe’s elite competition, as they offered little fight after going behind, with more than one eye on Wednesday’s semi-final first leg against FC Barcelona (20:45 CEST). There was some good news for FCB to take from the game, as Spaniard Javi Martinez made his Bundesliga comeback after eight and a half months out injured.
