Brandt and Bellarabi fire Leverkusen to victory

Goals from Julian Brandt and Karim Bellarabi gave Bayer 04 Leverkusen a 2-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Sunday afternoon. The Werkself now find themselves sixth in the table. Stuttgart have lost three of their last five games and are lodged in the middle of the table on 32 points.

Bayer 04 have selection issues

Roger Schmidt was without Hakan Calhanoglu, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Tin Jedvaj, Ömer Toprak, Roberto Hilbert, Sebastian Boenisch, Kevin Kampl, Charles Aránguiz and skipper Lars Bender. This meant that youngsters Benjamin Henrichs (19) and Vladen Yurchenko (22) started the game, with Joel Abu Hanna, Patrik Dzalto and Lukas Boeder making the bench for the first time.

The first chance of the game fell to Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez but his ninth minute effort lacked conviction. Bayer 04 took the lead soon after though via Brandt. Leverkusen dominated the first half and made life tough for VfB. Przemyslaw Tyton did well to keep out Brandt and Stefan Kießling before the break, whilst the hosts could have entered the interval level but Timo Werner’s 40th minute shot was kept out well by Bernd Leno.

The game was put to bed just four minutes into the second period as Bellarabi’s effort flew into the back of the net. It could have been worse for VfB but Brandt and Yurchenko both hit the frame of the goal when well placed.
