Blatter resigns as FIFA President

Joseph S. Blatter has resigned from his position as president of world football's governing body FIFA with immediate effect. The 79-year-old Swiss announced his resignation at a press conference on Tuesday at FIFA headquarters in Zurich. “We now need time to find the best candidate possible for this position,” said Blatter. “We need significant restructuring. I will make my mandate available, I’ve fought hard for changes and reforms. But I cannot do it alone.”

Domenico Scala, chairman of the FIFA audit and compliance committee will take over the post. He will call an extraordinary congress to elect a successor. “I was very closely related to FIFA and their interests. I would like to thank all supporters and companions,” said Blatter and left his seat without taking questions.

FIFA initially called a press conference for 18:00 CEST. This was postponed on numerous occasions before Blatter finally took to the press conference at 18:45 CEST. The Swiss was only voted in for his fifth term last Friday.
