Bielefeld through after shock win - Wolfsburg also progress

There was a massive upset for Bundesliga side Werder Bremen as they succumbed to defeat to third-division Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB Cup final 16. The hosts from Bielefeld ran out 3-1 winners with a goal either side of the half time, while VfL Wolfsburg progressed to the quarterfinals of the competition following a 2-0 triumph away to RB Leipzig.

Bielefeld claim shock win against Bremen

The Bundesliga side started the better of the two teams in Bielefeld but it was the underdogs from the third division that took the lead through Junglas just after the 30-minute mark. Arminia held on and went back to the dressing room with a shock 1-0 lead.

Both sides created chances in a frantic start to the second half but the third tier side not only maintained their lead, they doubled it in the 52nd minute when Schuppan struck after Bremen failed to clear their lines to make it 2-0. Bremen failed to lie down though and reduced the deficit with a left-footed shot from Clemens Fritz from outside the box to set up a pulsating climax. However, Werder were caught on the break in the 84th minute and Junglas restored Arminia’s two-goal lead. Fritz was dismissed in the 89th minute after being shown his second yellow to condemn Bremen’s misery and Bielefeld booked a shock place in the final eight.

Wolfsburg comfortably through

In the other evening kick-off, RB Leipzig got off to a great start against Bundesliga second-placed side VfL Wolfsburg but were unable to make their early pressure and chances pay. They were dealt a harsh lesson in taking your chances when Wolves took the lead against the run of play via Daniel Caligiuri.

Defender Timm Klose added a second for the top-flight visitors in the second half with a perfectly-placed header to secure their quarterfinal spot in the DFB Cup.
