Bayern suffer 1-0 defeat in Madrid

FC Bayern München were beaten 1-0 in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid, leaving them with an uphill battle going into next week’s return leg in Munich. A superb solo goal from Saul Niguez in the 11th minute proved decisive on the night for the resilient Atletico.

After a poor first half with few chances on goal, the German record champions bounced back with a much better attacking display in the second half, in which they created chance after chance. Only the woodwork and Atletico keeper Jan Oblak stood between FC Bayern and an equalising goal.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola surprised everyone with an unusually defensive formation, as Franck Ribéry and Thomas Müller, who has eight goals in the competition, started the match on the bench. 2014 World Cup winner Philipp Lahm made his 104th appearance in the Champions League and thus became the most capped German in the competition’s history.
