Bayern seal Supercup win in Dortmund

FC Bayern have started the new season with a win and a first trophy under Carlo Ancelotti. In the highly-prestigious Supercup, Bayern overcame a strong Borussia Dortmund side to win 2-0 – Arturo Vidal and Thomas Müller providing the goals.

A sell-out crowd of 81,360 fans were in attendance at the Signal Iduna Park to watch the traditional season opener between last season’s two best sides. Bayern started with new signing Mats Hummels in defence, Manuel Neuer in goal and star duo Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski in attack. Meanwhile, Borussia began the match with three new players making their competitive debuts: Marc Batra, Ousmane Dembélé and Sebastian Rode. World champions Mario Götze and André Schürrle were unused substitutes.

Dortmund began well, with Pierre-Emericl Aubameyang, Dembélé and Felix Passlack keeping Neuer busy – the Germany number one proving on several occasions why he is still the world’s best. Bayern’s first good chance came in the 38th minute, but neither Arturo Vidal, nor Lewandowski good beat Roman Bürki in the Dortmund goal.

Bayern strenghtened in the second half and eventually found the breakthrough when Arturo Vidal slotted home on the rebound after his initial effort was parried by Bürki (58’). The killer blow came with just ten minutes to go, Hummels heading towards Müller who found the space to finish from close distance.

It was a typical Ancelotti performance from Bayern, who sat back and defended solidly, before attacking the opponent on the break. Substitute Joshua Kimmich almost made it 3-0 shortly before the end, but the two goal lead was enough to carry Bayern to victory.
