Bayern fight back to beat Dortmund in thriller

FC Bayern München maintained their grip at the top of the Bundesliga table on Saturday evening, coming from behind to see off Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling encounter. The record champions were trailing 1-0 at the break after Germany international Marco Reus brilliantly headed in to spell the end of a 7-game run of clean sheets for Manuel Neuer. Pep Guariola's side were having plenty of chances but couldn't seem to force the ball over the line. However, with less than 20 minutes to play, former BVB striker Robert Lewandowski managed to fire a low shot beyond Roman Weidenfeller and level the scores.

The play was now only going in one direction and the introduction of Franck Ribéry bore fruit for FCB. The Frenchman was brought down in the box by Neven Subotic and Arjen Robben stepped up to convert from 12 yards in the 85th minute and confirm a 2-1 victory for the hosts. Bayern's unbeaten league campaign thus continues and they remain on course to record a third-straight Bundesliga title. Dortmund's season has gone from bad to worse though. Jürgen Klopp's men have now lost five in a row and six of the last seven in the league. Their last top-flight win came on matchday 3 against Freiburg. Their barren run has seen them slip into the relegation play-off spot and could even move down to 17th should Freiburg record a victory on Sunday.

Viktor Skripnik guided Werder Bremen to their first win of the season in Mainz, which also sees them move off the foot of the table. Shinji Okazaki put Mainz ahead after two minutes, but goals either side of half-time from Franco Di Santo put Werder in front. The home side pushed for an equaliser for the rest of the second-half but were unable to level. Okazaki had a goal ruled out for offside, which was as close as it got for Mainz.

HSV win at home for the first time in 211 days

Hamburger SV beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 at the Imtech Arena to pick up their first home victory for 211 days, which coincidentally came against the same opposition. The defeat was Bayer’s second of the season and came in front of 52,990 spectators. The games key moment came in the 26th minute when Rafael van der Vaart scored from the spot after a combination of Bernd Leno and Ömer Toprak fouled Marcell Jansen.

Five wins in a row for Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg remain on the heels of Bayern München after a stunning 4-0 away victory over VfB Stuttgart. The victory is Dieter Hecking’s 100th as a Bundesliga coach and sees his side pick up their fifth win in succession. Ivan Perisic opened the scoring after 15 minutes and the lead was doubled by Robin Knoche in first-half injury time. Kevin de Bruyne made it three just after half-time (48’) with Perisic grabbing a second with two minutes left to play.

Hannover 96 bounced back from their DFB Cup defeat to VfR Aalen by beating Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to some late drama. Jimmy Briand had a goal ruled out for a foul in the first-half for the hosts, who grabbed the win in the 88th minute thanks to an own goal from Frankfurt’s Alexander Madlung.
