Bayern come unstuck on opening weekend

Defending champions Bayern München were unable to claim victory in their first Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga fixture of the new season. The Bavarians drew 1-1 with SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon. Melanie Behringer put FCB in front moments after the interval but Hasret Kayikci equalised with 10 to go.

Olympic champion Melanie Behringer came close to opening the scoring early on but was thwarted by Laura Benkart, with Gina Lewandowski heading harmlessly over moments. Bayern were the better side throughout the opening exchanges but the Freiburg defence were resolute. The duo were at the heart of FCB’s best moments before the break but were unable to hit the back of the net, meaning that the sides were level at the interval.

Early goal after the break

Bayern took the lead just five minutes into the second period. Sara Däbritz was fouled in the box and Melanie Behringer tucked home the resulting spot kick with aplomb. They reacted well to taking the lead and came close to doubling it on numerous occasions, with Verena Faiß, Carina Wenninger and Vivianne Miedema all coming close to extending the advantage.

They were left to rue these missed opportunities late on as Hasret Kayikci slotted home an equaliser with 10 minutes left on the clock. Bayern came close to a winner in the closing exchanges but Sara Däbritz lacked composure when faced with a one-on-one opportunity in the 87th minute.
