Fourth-league teams Chemnitzer FC and SV Elversberg featured in the first major upset in the first round of the german Cup. Chemnitz beat newly promoted Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli 1-0 (1-0), Elversberg won on penalties against Hannover 96. Bayer Leverkusen crushed fifth-league opponent FK Pirmasens 11-1 (1-0).
On Friday Eintracht Frankfurt of the Bundesliga won 4-0 (2-0) at SV Wilhelmshaven, while 1. FC Kaiserlautern needed two goals in overtime to beat VfL Osnabrück 3-2 (1-1, 0-1).
