Bayer beat Mainz to trim Dortmund's lead

Brazil midfielder Renato Augusto trimmed Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga lead to nine points with a superb strike on Sunday to give second-place Bayer Leverkusen a 1-0 win at Mainz.

With the game heading towards a goalless draw, Augusto robbed Mainz's Danish defender Bo Svensson of possession on the edge of the penalty area and drilled home his shot on 82 minutes to poach three points for his team.

Ex-Germany captain Michael Ballack played the full 90 minutes for Leverkusen.

Dutch winger Arjen Robben netted a hat-trick and Franck Ribéry scored twice as Bayern Munich broke their losing streak with a 6-0 rout of Hamburg on Saturday on round 26, while leaders Borussia Dortmund were beaten 1-0 at Hoffenheim. Defenseman Dante secured Borussia Mönchengladbach an 1-1 at Werder Bremen in the late match.

1. FC Köln celebrated their sixth consecutive home win with a 4-0 (1-0) on Friday on Round 26 against high-flying Hannover 96. The guests miss second place and stay in third.

24 years after their last win at Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach hopes to end this bad streak on saturday evening. On sunday, second placed Bayer Leverkusen will play at Mainz and FC St. Pauli hopes to end its three game drought without a goal against VfB Stuttgart.
