Bartusiak: “We weren’t compact enough”

The women’s national team drew their second match of the Olympic football tournament, as they came from 2-0 down during the first half to draw 2-2 against Australia. Captain Saskia Bartusiak, who scored the equaliser to make it 2-2 in the 88th minute. Following the game, the centre-back spoke to journalist Paula Widmer in an interview for DFB.de about her third international goal in her 97th appearance and the mood in the squad.

DFB.de: Miss Bartusiak, you haven’t scored many goals so far with being a centre-back. Is this a special goal for you because of that?

Saskia Bartusiak: I stumbled after meeting the ball and both me and the ball ended up in the back of the net. I was obviously very excited. The equaliser was decisive for us. The most important thing was that we finished with four points on the board and Australia only have one after two games.

DFB.de: How did you deal with Australia taking the lead?

Bartusiak: We were 2-0 down. It was clear that we had to change something, step up our game and work harder. Australia’s first goal came early and at a terrible time in the 6th minute. It’s always bad for the team when you concede early. Our first just before the break was important as it gave us a boost.

DFB.de: What conclusions can you take from the game?

Bartusiak: We showed character and real desire, kept ourselves in the game and played with purpose. We deserved the 2-2 draw in the end. We will have to build on it. We won a point and that’s what it feels like. We now have to be constructive, compare notes and see where we need to improve.

DFB.de: What do you want to work on?

Bartusiak: We weren’t compact enough for long periods and that’s something that we will have to do better next time. We gave Australia too many goalscoring opportunities through simple mistakes. We are now concentrating on winning the final group game.

DFB.de: You’re travelling to Brasilia today, where you will be playing your next match.

Bartusiak: It’s always nice to see new cities, to get to grips with a new environment. Travel days are always stressful but it shouldn’t be too bad as the flight time isn’t very long. We are excited about Brasilia.
