Bartusiak rescues a point

Germany drew their second Rio 2016 group match on Saturday. A dramatic late equaliser from Saskia Bartusiak meant that the game against Australia finished 2-2. The DFB-Team return to action on Tuesday against Canada (21:00 CEST), needing just a draw to progress.

The first chance of the game fell to Melanie Leupolz but were third-minute effort was blocked. They lived to rue the miss as a breakaway lead by Lisa da Vanna resulted in Samantha Kerr firing past Almuth Schult moments later.

Australia dangerous on the break

Germany reacted well to going behind, with Alexandra Popp and Dzsenifer Marozsan missing good chances to equalise, however, Laura Alleway (16‘) and Katrina Gorry (40’) also had opportunities to extend Australia’s lead, before Caitlin Foord stabbed home in the 45th minute. The DFB-Team got one back seconds later. Sara Däbritz picked up the ball on the edge of the box and fired the ball into the back of the net via the post.

Late drama

The second half followed the same pattern as the first – Australia threatened on the counter but Germany held firm. Stephanie Catley had the best chance to end the game as a contest, but lacked composure at the key moment (57’).

This missed chance proved costly as Silvia Neid’s side grabbed an 88th minute equaliser. Melanie Behringer whipped in a delightful free kick and Bartusiak was on hand to bundle the ball into the back of the net.
