Ballack introduced in Leverkusen

An injury had kept him from the World Cup. Now, he focuses on one goal only – the upcoming season in the German Bundeslíga. Rehab progresses well, so the 33-year old Michael Ballack says with brimming confidence: “I try to join team practice as early as possible.” His new club Bayer Leverkusen introduced him to fans and media this week.

“Progress is visible. I’m hitting the weights and expect to start running soon”, Ballack reported. He plans to be part of the team at the season opener against Borussia Dortmund, either on August 21 or 22.

“If you had asked me a few months ago, I certainly would not have thought that I’ll return to the Bundesliga. The team has so much potential, and I had spend three good years here in Leverkusen, that’s what made me opt for Bayer”, says Ballack.

Rudi Völler: “Ballack will certainly help us get better”

General Manager Wolfgang Holzhäuser feels great about the new acquisition: “That might be the most important transfer in a few years. We aim for more than fourth place, and signing Michael Ballack sends that message to everybody.”

Rudi Völler, Bayer’s Sports Director, adds: “Even if you don’t count his qualities as a player, which he still possesses, his leadership is such an important attribute. Our team is still fairly young, with a few experienced players on the roster, and Michael Ballack with his experience and poise will certainly help us get better.”

Bayer’s coach Jupp Heynckes said: “Michael is such an outstanding team player. With him on our team, we’ll have a healthier balance between young and old.”

Ballack signed a two-year contract with Bayer, following four years with Chelsea London. His ankle injury occurred during the F.A. Cup final against Portsmouth, when Kevin Boateng stepped on his foot, which led to Ballack having to cancel the World Cup. Ballack had been with Bayer Leverkusen from 1999 to 2002.
