Augsburg and St. Pauli sail into the next round

There were no surprises in the DFB Cup first round fixtures on Friday evening. Bundesliga side FC Augsburg survived a tricky start to beat fifth-tier FV Ravensburg 2-0, while FC St. Pauli celebrated a comfortable victory against northern Regionalliga side VfB Lübeck.

New coach Dirk Schuster saw his team come close early on against the cup debutants from Pfullendorf, when Raul Bobadilla hit the crossbar. Ja-Cheol Koo was also denied the opener when his chance was cleared off the line. The Korean would get his goal just ten minutes later, however, when he latched onto Caiuby’s pass to give Augsburg the lead.

Bobadilla wrapped things up for Schuster’s team midway through the second half with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box. Ravensburg’s Rahman Soyudogru saw red shortly before full time for a second bookable offence, as Augsburg moved into the second round for the eighth time in the last nine years.

Lübeck matched their opponents in the opening stages against St. Pauli, but a set-piece gave the Hamburg-based club an early lead. Vegar Eggen Hedestad curled a free kick into the corner from 25 yards on the 15 minute mark. The second division side had control of the game from then on, with Lübeck relying on the counter.

After the break, Sören Gonther extended the leave from yet another set-piece, before Marvin Ducksch wrapped it up minutes before full time. It was a first win in Lübeck since 1964 for St. Pauli, when the Hamburg side won 4-1 in the Regionalliga Nord. The lower league side had won the previous four meetings until now.
