Aue go for the sensational against Frankfurt, 1860 surprise in Mainz

The second round of the DFB Cup got off to an interesting start as to of the favourites went out in the four early kick offs on Tuesday evening. Aue pulled of the biggest surprise of the night as the third division team beat Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0. Mainz also bowed out to a lower division team, this time 1860 München, who won 2-1 away from home. Nürnberg defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 5-1, while thanks to Salomon Kalou, Hertha turned it around against FSV Frankfurt to get the win.

Aue pulled off the big surprise of the day. The team from the East took the lead in the 74th minute through Max Wegner, after having had the better of the chances, but not converting. The 10,750 fans, however, could celebrate nearer the end, having deserved to pull off the surprise result against the team two tiers above them.

1860 come from behind in Mainz

Mainz missed out on an opportunity to get to the quarter finals, and recorded their fifth defeat in their last six games. An own goal from Christopher Schindler in the 6th minute looked to be decisive, as Mainz controlled the game for the whole first 45, but a red card for Bengtsson just before the break made the difference. 1860 came out well on top in the second half, with their man advantage, and got their rewards in the 70th and 77th minutes in the form of an equaliser and a winner. The scorers for 1860 were Mugosa and Okotie, both of whose efforts left Karius in the Mainz net helpless.

Biggest ever cup defeat for Düsseldorf

Nürnberg defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 5-1, getting them to the quarter finals of the cup for the first time since the 2011/2012 season. The goals in the first in the half came from Guido Burgstaller in the 10th minute, Hanno Behrens in the 17th, Nicklas Füllkrug in the 41st and Tim Leibold in the 43rd, creating a healthy half time lead of 4-0. In the second half, Danny Blum made it five, but a few minutes later, Kerem Demirbay scored no more than a consolation goal to make it 5-1. Two-time cup winners Düsseldorf had to settle for their biggest defeat in cup history and also a second round cup exit.

Hertha with shaky victory

Hertha travelled away to Frankfurt to play second division FSV, but found it more of a challenge than they would have liked. Frankfurt played compactly and defensively and became offensive during the match too, which Hertha found difficult to deal with. FSV took the lead early in the second half through Tim Golley, but Salomon Kalou equalised shortly after. The game finished a 1-1 meaning it had to be taken to extra time, and nine minutes in, it was Salomon Kalou again who found the net for Hertha Berlin, this time from the penalty spot. Hertha survived a scare to make it through to the quarters of the DFB Cup.
