Ascona chimney sweep as bearer of good luck

Ascona has given Germany a special lucky charm to help them on their way to EURO 2016 in France (10th June – 10th July). A chimney sweep, believed to be a bearer of good luck, from the town in Ticino handed DFB president Reinhard Grindel, general secretary Dr. Friedrich Curtius, deputy secretary general and media director Ralf Köttker and die Mannschaft general manager Oliver Bierhoff the lucky charm on Wednesday at the opening of the press centre. "Your success would also be our success," stated Mayor Luca Pissoglio.

The DFB delegation handed over a team shirt in exchange – and paid to have the turf relaid. "For us, it’s fantastic that they’re here. It’s also brilliant and a money can’t buy opportunity for our children, who will be able to play on the same pitch that the world champions have used," said Mayor Pissoglio. "It is nice that we’ll leave a reminder from our stay," explained Grindel.

Curtius praised, amongst other things, the fact that the Swiss location "has done everything possible with regards to our security." Bierhoff said: "We have optimal training conditions – that is the most important matter. The logistics are incredibly advantageous. It is a beautiful setting and we are meeting lots of friendly people."

Eight years ago the DFB team were based in Ascona ahead of the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland and will now prepare for the 2016 tournament by Lake Maggiore until the 3rd June.
