Arsenal into FA Cup quaters

Despite an injury to World Champion Per Mertesacker, Arsenal have safely reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup and can carry on dreaming of an historic third successive title. Following their 0-0 draw at home two weeks ago, the Gunners were 4-0 winners in their replay with Championship leaders Hull City. Die Mannschaft’s Mesut Özil was rested for the match, which – despite the scoreline – provided a stern test for Arsene Wenger’s side.

Mertesacker will have painful memories of the tie, having been subbed of after 33 minutes following a cut to his eye sustained in an aerial battle. Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock on 41 minutes, but it took until the final 20 minutes for Arsenal to seal the victory. Another goal from the France international, followed by a Theo Walcott brace, finally earned the Premier League’s third-placed side a place in the last eight.

No one has won the world’s oldest cup competition three times in a row since Blackburn Rovers between 1884 and 1886. Arsenal have lifted the silverware in each of the last two seasons.
