Arsenal go top, while Barcelona record narrow win

With Mesut Özil and Shkodran Mustafi in their ranks, Arsenal missed the chance to record their seventh win in a row, on matchday nine of the Premier League. Nevertheless, the North London side moved to the top of the table with their point. Arsène Wenger’s could only draw 0-0 against 17th placed Middlesbrough. The result means that the Gunners now sit on 20 points, one ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side, who welcome Southampton to the Etihad stadium on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Leicester City won their third league of the game the season, as former Germany player Robert Huth started for the Foxes. World champion Ron-Robert Zieler had to settle for a place on the defending champions’ bench. Claudio Ranieri’s side beat Crystal Palace 3-1. Ahmed Musa (42’), Shinji Okazaki and former Bundesliga player Christian Fuchs (80’) were all on the scoresheet. Yohan Cabaye (85’) scored a consolation effort for the visitors. Leicester remain mid-table as they moved on to eleven points.

Barcelona made to work for win

A possibly serious knee injury to captain Andreas Iniesta overshadowed Barcelona’s late win over Valencia. With tears in his eyes, world and European champion Iniesta left the field and was substituted in just the 14th minute. Before that, he injured his knee after a tough challenge from Enzo Perez. A diagnosis of the injury has not yet been given.

Without their playmaker in the side, the Catalans found it difficult. Germany international keeper Marc-André Stegen started for the reigning Spanish champions. Although Barca went ahead through superstar Lionel Messi (22’), the hosts then turned it around thanks to goals from Munir El Haddadi (52’), on loan from Barcelona, and Rodrigo (56’). Luis Suarez then equalised in the 62nd minute, before Lionel Messi converted a 94th minute penalty to ensure Barcelona took all three points.

Juve and Khedira lose heavyweight clash in Milan

It was the second defeat of the season for Italy's record champions, handed to them by Manuel Locatelli's 65th minute winner. The result meant that Milan closed the gap on Juve at the top of the table to just two points.
