Arsenal and Roma through, Valencia eliminated

Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker’s Arsenal avoided a first group-stage exit in 16 years thanks to an Oliver Giroud hattrick in the 3-0 win against Olympiacos, finishing second in Group F behind German champions Bayern München. Antonio Rüdiger’s AS Roma booked their ticket into the knockout round despite the 0-0 draw with BATE Borisov, but it wasn’t to be for Shkodran Mustafi and Valencia as they were beaten 2-0 at home to Olympique Lyon.

Having had no points after two games and been beaten 3-2 at home to the Greek side, Arsenal were on the brink of elimination. Giroud’s first hattrick for the club ensured otherwise, however, as the Gunners ran out 3-0 winners in Athens. Özil and Mertesacker both put on a strong performance for the English side.

Chelsea send Porto into the Europa League

English champions Chelsea also booked their ticket into the draw for round of 16, which takes place in Nyon on Monday. José Mourinho’s team beat Porto 2-0 to win Group G. An own goal by Ivan Marcano set them on the way to victory, before Willian wrapped it up for the 2012 winners in the second half.

Dynamo Kiev take second place thanks to a 1-0 win against Maccabi Tel Aviv, but Porto will be in the Europa League draw.

Roma through, Valencia defeated

AS Roma scrape through despite a disappointing goalless draw against BATE Borisov, with a point enough to take second place behind holders Barcelona, who drew 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen on the night.

The big outsiders in the knockout stages are KAA Gent. The Belgian champions beat Group H winners Zenit St. Petersburg 2-1 in order to clinch second place in the group. World Cup winner Mustafi and Valencia drop into the Europa League after a 2-0 defeat to Olympique Lyon.

The round of 16 first-leg fixtures will take place on the 16th/17th and 23rd/24th February, before the return fixtures on 8th/9th and 15th/16th March.
