Arsenal and Chelsea slip up, Can's Liverpool drop two points

There was a New Year hangover for Chelsea as 2015 kicked off in the English Premier League. Jose Mourinho’s side were beaten 5-3 by London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Germany international André Schürrle didn’t feature in the second defeat of the season for the Blues. Chelsea remain top, but only on alphabetical order as they are now level with Manchester City on points, goal difference and goals scored.

Arsenal suffered a further setback earlier in the afternoon. The Gunners, who had Per Mertesacker in the starting line-up, lost 2-0 away to Southampton. Liverpool also dropped points on New Year’s Day. Emre Can played 90 minutes for last season’s runners-up, but wasn’t able to help his side avoid a 2-2 draw against bottom side Leicester City.

Chelsea lose despite going in front

Diego Costa put Chelsea ahead with his 14th league goal of the campaign, but Tottenham reacted superbly. Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Andros Townsend scored to put Spurs 3-1 up at the break. Another Kane goal shortly after the restart all but ended the match as a contest. Mourinho’s side did respond via Eden Hazard, but Nacer Chadli restored Tottenham’s three-goal lead in the 78th minute. John Terry’s close-range finish three minutes from time did nothing to change the result. André Schürrle wasn’t in the squad as Chelsea conceded five goals in a Premier League game for the first time under Mourinho.

Arsenal can be happy not to have lost by more than two goals in their game against Southampton without injured World Champions Lukas Podolski and Mesut Özil. Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic scored for the Saints. Podolski missed out with a groin problem.

Steven Gerrard’s two penalties weren’t enough for three points for Liverpool, as goals from David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp earned Leicester a point against the sloppy Reds.
