Angerer ahead of her final World Cup: "I don't feel sad"

Ahead of her last World Cup, Nadine Angerer is determined to end her successful international career with a bang. “I’m enjoying this time, just like ahead of any other tournament. I really want to win”, said the 36-year-old at a press conference on Thursday in Ottawa. “I don’t feel sad, the hunger for success is a lot greater.”

Following the recent training sessions, ahead of the first group match on Sunday against the Ivory Coast (22:00 CEST), the goalkeeper is “very optimistic”. The first game is “always very important and at the same time difficult. Therefore we want to start in the right of frame of mind to fight”, said the 139-capped international, who took part in a meeting with FIFA on various themes, along with her teammates on Thursday afternoon.

Angerer is expecting an especially physical opponent in the first match. “The players should be very quick; they will probably be very robust and aggressive. They will also be very motivated as its their first World Cup”, said Angerer, who after the World Cup will finish the season in the US-League NWSL with Portland Thorns, before finally hanging up their boots.
