Both national team star Timo Werner and U21 forward Davie Selke were on the scoresheet twice, seeing RB Leipzig to a 4-1 win against Hertha BSC at the Olympiastadion on Bundesliga Matchday 32. The victory confirms that Ralf Hasenhüttl’s side now mathematically cannot finish below third place, meaning that their place in the group stages of next season’s UEFA Champions League is confirmed.
Leipzig were dominant from the start, and raced to an early lead through Werner’s pinpoint header after 12 minutes. They remained largely in control throughout the half, restricting the hosts‘ opportunities and coming close to doubling their lead themselves, but went into the break leading by the one goal.
The visitors began the second half strongly, and in somewhat bizarre fashion grabbed a second goal in the 52nd minute. A slip from Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein gave the ball to Yussuf Poulsen in the penalty area, who slipped a square ball in to the open Werner to slot calmly home. Hertha found a route back into the game late on, when Rani Khedira inadvertently headed the ball past his own goalkeeper to bring the score to 2-1. However, Selke’s double in the 89th and 92nd minutes saw Leipzig to the points and into the Champions League.
It was RBL’s 20th win of the season, which sees them equal the all-time Bundesliga record for wins recorded by a team in their first season after promotion (Bayern München in 1965/1966). Leipzig produced an impressive performance against the capital club, who have won twelve of their eighteen home matches this season.
