75 hours after league encounter: Gladbach again victorious over Schalke

Borussia Mönchengladbach also won the second encounter against FC Schalke 04 within the space of four days, as the Foals secured a 2-0 victory at Schalke in the second round of the DFB Cup. SV Werder Bremen won in another encounter between two top flight clubs, with Anthony Ujah scoring the only goal in the 1-0 win over 1. FC Köln.

Fourth division team Carl-Zeiss Jena and fifth division side SSV Reutlingen were unable to cause upsets in their games, with Jena losing 2-0 against VfB Stuttgart and Reutlingen suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of second division side Eintracht Braunschweig.

Gladbach take down Schalke again

Just 75 hours after their 3-1 home win in the Bundesliga, Gladbach again went head to head with Schalke. Contrary to their league encounter on the weekend, Schalke got off to a good start in the game and Gladbach needed keeper Yann Sommer needed to make a number of first half changes to prevent the Foals from falling behind.

Instead, the visitors took a surprising lead just before half-time with Lars Stindl taking advantage of a slip by Joel Matip to fire Gladbach into the lead. In the second half Schalke keeper Michael Gspurning, who was replacing an ill Ralf Fährmann, conceded a penalty which Thorgan Hazard converted. Schalke were unable to stage a comeback and were thus beaten for a second time by Gladbach in just four days.

Ujah makes the difference

Werder Bremen took the initiative early on against Köln but chances from Philipp Bargfrede and Anthony Ujah failed to find the target. Midway through the second half Ujah, the former Köln player, gave Werder a 1-0 lead. The visitors increased their attacking efforts after falling behind, but were unable to produce any clear chances before half-time.

In the second half the Billy Goats continued to apply pressure but a combination of Werder keeper Felix Wiedwald and an inaccuracy meant they couldn’t score. The best chance was Anthony Modeste's attempt shortly after the break which only hit the outside of the post. Werder defended their slim lead and were therefore able to book a ticket for the DFB Cup round of 16 for the first time since 2010.

Braunschweig win comfortably

Eintracht Braunschweig recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory over lower league outfit SSV Reutlingen. Gerit Holtmann struck twice with Emil Berggreen and Orhan Ademi rounding off the scoring. The hosts did though put in an impressive performance and even had the chance to take the lead, but in the end Braunschweig were too dominant and secured an overall uncontested victory.

Jena miss out on next upset

Underdogs Carl-Zeiss Jena entered the 2nd round encounter with VfB Stuttgart after having dispatched Hamburger SV in the first round. Another Cup upset was not on the cards for the fourth division team however, as goals from Martin Harnik and Alexandru Maxim saw Stuttgart claim a hard fought win. Jena created a number of good chances and were close to an equaliser until the dying moments of the game, when Maxim converted a penalty after Jena's Niclas Erlbeck had been sent off for handling the ball on the goal line.
