4-0 against France: Germany women convincing in final 2017 match

The Germany women’s team enjoyed a dominant win to end the year on a high. Steffi Jones’ team won their friendly against France 4-0 thanks to a convincing performance.

Wolfsburg player Alexandra Popp (21’, 44’) and Potsdam’s Svenja Huth (39’, 53’) scored a brace each in front of the 6,505 spectators at the Schüco-Arena, Bielefeld. France missed a chance to pull one back in the final stages when Eugenie le Sommer missed a penalty (85’).

Popp scores two goals and an assist

“We’ve made a step in the right direction and we’ve got back to winning ways,” Jones said on television after the final whistle. “The loss to Iceland woke us up and we proved today that we can be better than that.” Brace-scorer Popp added: “It was really important for us to keep a clean sheet today. We kept it tight at the back and showed how well we can play.”

While Melanie Leupolz, Lina Magull, Hasret Kayikci (all muscle problems) and Simone Laudehr (foot pains) all had to miss the game with injuries, captain Dzsenifer Marozsan returned to the team after breaking her cheek bone at the beginning of October and sitting out from the national team’s recent matches.

The prominent captain made the assist for the first goal with a free kick. Popp rose the higher than the opponents in the middle of the box to head to ball under the crossbar and take a 1-0 lead.

Grindel watches Germany women’s great performance

DFB President Reinhard Grindel and sporting director Horst Hrubesch were in attendance to see the impressive performance. The team’s play became increasingly fluid throughout the match. Mandy Islacker (26’) and Verena Faißt (38’) missed chances before Huth scored the second goal of the match. Popp headed on to the Wolfsburg player, who was positioned on the line.

Jones’ team took control of the game when Popp scored a close-range goal with a deflection to go 3-0 up. Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult had a relatively easy afternoon as France’s 35-match run of conceding a maximum of one goal came to an end.

Huth scores spectacularly from distance

At the other end of the pitch, Huth was once again fantastic as she sent the ball looping into the net from 20 yards out. Germany then shifted the intensity down a gear.

Schult was called into action to save le Sommer’s header (70’). The keeper dived to the correct side to save a France free kick shortly after, but didn’t need to make a save as the ball went past the left post.

Germany’s women secured their ninth win of the year from 14 internationals. The team have recorded three defeats, two draws and nine wins this year.
