3:1-win over Turkey in U 17-opening game

A perfect beginning and a flying start for the German U 17 at the European Championships: Marco Pezzaiuoli’s team defeated Turkey 3:1 (1:1) in their tournament opener at Erfurt. Germany sits ontop of the Group B standings, with England and the Netherlands playing a 1:1-tie earlier on Wednesday.

“Despite falling behind during the opening phase, I felt we had a good start. My team showed character. We responded quickly and the two goals in the second half were spectacular. I’m quite satisfied with our performance. We can compete at this level”, said Germany’s coach Pezzaiuoli.

Turkey took the lead when German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen parried a header by Deniz Herber, but then had no chance against the rebound-shot by Hasan Ahmet-Sari (10.). Prior to the 10th minute, the DFB-team had not given up a goal in 2009.
