14 penalty shootouts in the DFB Cup so far - a record

Karl Wald invented them in 1970, Marco van Basten is thinking about abolishing them, but the Germans have made it their speciality - it is of course the penalty shootout! Every fourth game in this season’s DFB Cup has been decided by one.

14 games in this year’s DFB Cup have gone all the way to penalties, seven in the first round, five in the second and two in the round of 16 – a record! Until this season, the record was 13 from the 2014/15 campaign.

Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Arminia Bielefeld have all faced two penalty shootouts this season and kept their nerve to win. On both occasions, BVB came up against a team from Berlin (1. FC Union and Hertha BSC), and both times profited from their oppositions' inaccurate shooting, with their opponents missing three spot kick a piece in each shootout.

The longest penalty shootout in DFB Cup history took place on the 27th of August 1995. The then Regionalliga side SV Sandausen beat Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart 13-12 in the first round. 25 shots were taken from the spot after a 2-2 draw during normal time, with Hendrik Herzog missing the decisive penalty.
