1. FC Magdeburg vs. FC Augsburg: a second cup upset?

It’s déjà-vu for third-league 1. FC Magdeburg and Bundesliga club FC Augsburg in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Sunday 13th August (18:30 CEST). The clubs met at the opening of the cup season almost three years ago to the day. The then-Regionalliga club cooked up a completely unexpected surprise against the Bundesliga team, when the Saxony-Anhalt club beat the Upper Bavarians 1-0.

Five players from the current squad stood on the grass in Magdeburg’s MDCC-Arena when the whistle blew that day. Two on the Magdeburg side provided the result, when Nico Hammann set up goalscorer Christian Beck for the only goal of the game. It was only the third game in the dugout for new coach Jens Härtel, who is still holds the reins at FCM.

Magdeburg’s luck in the cup then ran out; they lost on penalties to Bayer Leverkusen in the second round similarly to their first round loss to Eintracht Frankfurt the previous year. Magdeburg enjoyed their best cup run in the 2000-01 season when they didn’t lose until their quarter final against Schalke 04. And Augsburg? They managed to reach the semifinal in the 2009-10 season and have been in the last sixteen five times out of seven since.
