World Cup winner Höwedes to stay with Schalke

World Cup winner Benedikt Höwedes will remain at Schalke 04. Sporting director Horst Heldt confirmed the news, when presenting new manager André Breitenreiter on Monday. The buy-out clause in the defender, and club captain, Höwedes’ contract will therefore not be activated.

“He has had two offers from abroad. We are happy that he has decided to continue to play for Schalke,” Heldt said. “He is our captain and we need him.” Among others, FC Arsenal, with World Cup winners Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski in their squad, had previously declared their interest in Höwedes. Höwedes could still move for an agreed transfer fee until Monday.
