World Cup qualifiers: Confed Cup winners meet in Stuttgart

It will be the first reunion for the Confed Cup winners since their tournament victory in Russia last summer. Now though, it is World Cup qualifying with the competition in Russia next year the target. Today, the 24-man squad (21 outfield players and three goalkeepers) are assembling with Joachim Löw and his coaching team in Stuttgart, where preparation for the two upcoming matches is taking place. If all goes to plan, Die Mannschaft can secure its ticket for the World Cup finals on Monday, with two victories from the next two games.

First up is the Czech Republic, who Germany face this Friday at 20:45 (CEST). The following Monday, Die Mannschaft play host to Norway in Stuttgart, also at 20:45 (CEST). Germany lead Group C with a perfect record after six games having conceded just one goal. Northern Ireland are second with 13 points while the Czech Republic lie in third with 9. Azerbaijan (7), Norway (4) and San Marino (0) follow these. “We want to ensure our qualification as group leaders as quickly as possible,” said Löw. “We want two wins from our next two games.”

The squad will come together this afternoon in Stuttgart and train later in the day. After a press conference tomorrow and a second training session, the DFB team will fly to Prague. The final training session before the match against the Czech Republic takes place in the Eden Arena at 17:30 (CEST) on Thursday. This is where the qualifier the following evening will be held, after which, on the same evening, the squad will travel back to Stuttgart – hopefully with 3 points in the bag – to begin the preparation for the Norway game.
